St. John’s Community Tea was set up over 8 years ago and was aimed at, initially but not limited to, those people in the congregation and the parish who had limited social contact during the week. It meets on the second Wednesday of each month (although not August) in the Social Room from 2.30 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. Tea and cake are served at 2.30 p.m. And any notices relating to previous or future meetings and church events are given out.
The activity/talk usually begins at about 2.45 p.m. for up to an hour when those who would like another cup of tea can have their cups refreshed.
If we know of people who struggle to get to St. John’s for whatever reason we try to arrange lifts for them. We do not make a charge for the normal monthly activities but people are asked to make a donation which we put into a fund for paying for those speakers and/or charities who make a charge for their talk.
If people go on the outings in July and December then we let them know in advance of the cost so they are not suddenly presented with having to pay for something for which they have not budgeted.
Details of each month’s activity are highlighted in the church’s weekly Notices, posters in church and on the outside notice boards, the local press and the booklets that are distributed in the areas most easily accessible to St. John’s.
The activities include but are not limited to Bingo, Beetle, talks and outings (July and December). An example of this was in November 2018 when it was the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War when we had an afternoon of music and readings relating to that commemoration.
